THERE are few, if indeed any justifiable excuses Sligo can use on this occasion to hide the glaring cracks that appeared in our defeat against Wexford on Sunday afternoon. Well-beaten and second best just about sums it all up and propping up Division 3 of the National Football League tells us that relegation might now be a real possibility.
Firstly, it should be said that the players lacked nothing in commitment but sadly they weren’t slick enough for the opposition. Wexford are a well-oiled machine and their opening fixture win over Longford obviously gave them the confidence to see off a Sligo side that went up culde-sacs far too often.
I’m a firm believer that having an extra man - something Sligo had for more than half the game - can be a liability and when George Sunderland was sent to the line a full ten minutes before the interval it buoyed up Wexford a lot more than it did Sligo. Even at that stage the writing was on the wall, but supporters had a right to expect a more positive response once we had an extra pair of hands at our disposal.
