Belcarra man takes home two world karate medals
With 15,000 competitors in attendance, the World Police and Fire Games, held this year in Quebec, Canada, is the second largest competitive event in the world, second only to the Olympic Games. For someone to return home with a medal from such an event is a major achievement, but for one Mayo Man, it was extra special when he returned home with two. Damien Gormley from Belcarra, and working as a Garda in Millstreet Station, Galway, did just that, when he represented Ireland as part of the Garda team in the Karate division, and returned home with a bronze medal in Kata, and a silver medal in Kumite. Damien has been a member of White Tiger Martial Arts, based in Castlebar for the last seven years, and in his time he has won a host of national and international titles. In the Kumite final the Belcarra man faced a Russian, who stood over 6’6’’ tall, and was the champion for the previous three Games. Damien gave it everything he had, but in the end, he had to settle for silver. Martin O’Malley, chief instructor of White Tiger Martial Arts was very proud of his colleague, “I’m delighted for Damien, and I feel that what he has achieved is a proud moment for himself and his family and for us a club.”
The Games in 2007 are to be held in Australia, and the young Garda will be going for the title. “Now that I know what I have to do, I won’t be settling for bronze and silver,” he added. Damien and all the members of White Tiger Martial Arts would like to congratulate Allison Clancy, David Conlon, Darren Conlon, Donal Barrett and Owen O’Malley on their performances at the games, and also to thank St Paul’s Garda Credit Union for their support While Damien would personally like to thank, Lisa Duffy, Rosemary Duffy, Laura Fahey, Sinead Griffin and Caroline Early, who are members of White Tiger Martial Arts Karate Team for their support and assistance in preparing for the Games. “I wouldn’t have achieved the success I did, without these exceptional people,” Damien said.
