Support local business and shop local
By PAUL CLAFFEY

WE’RE all geared up and ready to go with our special three-day shopping promotion in Castlebar which kicks off on Thursday and will run until this Saturday.

The idea of the Three Grand Days Out Festival is to generate a real festival of shopping value in Castlebar over a three-day period and that in turn will, we hope, instil confidence in people to start spending again in their local town. If this promotion is a success we hope to extend it to other towns around Mayo in the coming months.

We are acutely aware how difficult it is for businesses at present. Consumer confidence is low yet overheads for shops continue to soar. There is no question that there is definitely better value for money in most sectors so we all need to realise that whilst money is tighter and budgets are limited there is always a demand for value products.

Here at Midwest Radio we depend solely on the businesses of the region in order to survive so we never make any apologies for asking people to shop local. We often get criticised for doing so. I believe we have an onus to show loyalty to those who have been so loyal to us over the past two decades. In the context of this week’s promotion in Castlebar we want the business sector to know that when there is real value for money out there – and when they are told about it – people are prepared to spend money in their local areas.

To whet the appetite of shoppers we are doing a number of special promotions around the three-day event.

Firstly, we are hiding €3,000 in cash tokens in various parts of the town and once one of the tokens is located it earns the shopper €100 in cash. For each day of the festival 10 of these tokens will be placed in all sorts of places in randomly selected businesses around Castlebar.

We are also going to have our Midwest Mystery Man on the prowl with stacks of giveaways for listeners who can identify him based on the clues given out on Midwest Radio at various hours of each day, and I suppose the most important aspect of all is the fact that the majority of businesses in Castlebar have rowed-in behind the promotion by putting on special offers for all three days of the event.

This is a relatively new departure for Midwest Radio in terms of approach but we have to support local traders in their hour of need and most people will accept that with a fair degree of doom and gloom around they need all the support they can get.

The festival kicks off on Thursday morning next when I host a special music morning with John McNicholl in the Linenhall Arts Theatre at 11 o’clock. Unfortunately all tickets for the gig are gone but make sure you tune in. It is equally important that as many people as possible join us in Castlebar on Thursday, Friday and Saturday for what promises to bring life and energy back to the streets of the county town.

Finally, any businesses who would like to put on special offers for the event and who would like us to promote them in advance can simply e-mail all the details to castlebar@midwestradio.ie and we will do our bit in bolstering the local economy for the three day shopping bonanza.
