Let’s bring back Ciaran McDonald

SIR – I have a lot of sympathy for the Mayo football team who have given their all in the hope and expectations of winning the Sam Maguire for Mayo.

However, I have no sympathy for the powers that dictate the GAA in Mayo for the decline in the team’s recent performances.

They had a brilliant manager in Mickey Moran and fired him after taking the team to the All-Ireland Final in 2006. Mickey had taken the Mayo team and people to his heart; had done a brilliant job in his first year in charge and it was a disgrace he was not allowed to continue.

I am certain that he would not have omitted Ciaran McDonald from the team during the past three years. He would not have belittled the most naturally gifted footballer ever to lace a pair of football boots by sending him a text message inviting him to come for a trial. The fact is that Ciaran McDonald should have played for Mayo last year and the previous year. He is still good enough to be introduced as a sub this year.

McDonald’s situation is only typical of what has happened due to mismanagement by the aristocrats who dictate football in Mayo. Many an excellent player who deserved to wear the Green and Red were never given the chance due to favoritism. Is it any wonder then that it almost 60 years since we won the last All-Ireland and by the looks of things, we are now as far away as ever.

Yours sincerely
