Exam stress and summer festivals
BY PAUL CLAFFEY

TOMORROW is a momentous day in the lives of 50,000 plus young people who begin their leaving cert examinations for 2010.

Six years of study, exams and work will now be crammed in to the next 10 or 11 days, which will then decide the futures of all these teenagers.

For years a sizable amount of the population have been calling for a different system of examination whereby it would be a series of evaluations over the secondary school years rather than one big exam at the end.

Nevertheless, for the foreseeable future, what we have is what we have and that is what our children and teachers have to work with. It’s an extremely stressful time for parents and students and particularly in the last number of years since the downturn in the economy, results at the end of the exams are more important now than ever.

Having said that, all any student is expected to do is their best and if a reasonable amount of work and preparation has been put in over the last few years, then there is no reason why that will not yield results when they come out in the middle of August.

I’m a firm believer that if you are determined and have a good idea of what you want to do, with hard work and dedication, you will achieve your life’s goal.

Not every student is destined to pick up nine straight As, and I would go as far as to say life may even be dull if they did.

There is a place for everyone and no matter what career or job you pursue, it will be important and will be a vital cog in the great spectrum of humanity. So for what it’s worth, my advice to all students is to do your best, work as hard as you can and you shouldn’t go too far wrong.

NOW that we have hit the month of June and the temperatures are rising, our thoughts are turning to Fleadhs, festivals, football matches and various other outdoor events.

For the next three months, we are going to be spoiled for choice right along the western seaboard with every sort of conceivable entertainment coming our way, right up to and including Westlife and Leonard Cohen appearing for a couple of nights at Lissadell House.

From the smallest to the largest, it’s guaranteed there is going to be something to suit everyone this summer. All these events don’t just happen overnight, in many cases months of planning and hard work go into making them a success.

Thankfully the spirit of volunteerism is still alive and well and so many people give up nights and weekends and precious time away from family members so that others can have a good time.

It would be practically impossible for you to support everything, but in as much as possible, try to spread you patronage around this summer.

In fact, lots of the events will be free but will only be successful on the basis that people attend them.
