Looking after your heart
BY PAUL CLAFFEY
I KNOW that people get tired of always being told what to do in the interests of their own health issues but I think its important to note that this week the Irish Society of Chartered Physiotherapists has launched its annual Move 4 Health health promotion campaign and the theme of this year’s event is Be Heart Wise and take Regular Exercise, with an emphasis on cardiovascular health.
The Move for Health campaign is intended to provide a focal point to generate public awareness of the benefits of physical activity in the prevention of heart disease.
We shouldn’t under-estimate the importance of daily exercise and walking is by far and away the best way of getting some physical activity under your belt. As someone who enjoys a game of golf I’m often reminded that whilst walking is involved it doesn’t have the same impact of actually taking a walk.
To mark the Move 4 Health campaign, HSE Chartered Physiotherapists in Mayo are organising information stands to promote heart health in a number of locations around the county. During the week, chartered physiotherapists will be present in areas such as Ballina, Swinford, Westport, Claremorris, Mayo General Hospital and Belmullet to provide information and advice on cardiovascular health. The physiotherapists will also provide information in relation to exercise venues (indoor and outdoor gyms) and walking trails local to each area.
It would be important that we all would encourage anyone who has any questions or concerns about cardiovascular health to visit one of the information stands that will be located in various towns around the county during the week of the Move 4 Health campaign. It will give people an opportunity to ask questions about heart health and physical exercise, and to raise any issues of concern in relation to heart disease and its prevention.
It is important to remember that physical inactivity is a key risk factor in heart disease, and at least 30 minutes of regular, moderate-intensity physical activity on five days per week reduces the risk of several common heart complaints.
The information stands will be at available throughout the county this Wednesday, June 2, between 11 am and 2 pm at Dunnes Stores, Ballina; The Gateway Hotel, Swinford; Supervalu in Westport; Tesco in Claremorris and Mayo General Hospital. Then on Friday the stand will be available to the general public in Belmullet at Brogans Eurospar also between 11 am and 2 pm.
