Conroy goal caps magic day for The Neale
By Michael Gallagher

THE NEALE 3-09 BREAFFY 1-11
THREE scores in the last four minutes sent the county title to The Neale at the end of a thrilling encounter in McHale Park.

Breaffy were a point clear and eyeing glory as time ticked away but the southern stars swept downfield to grab the scores that set their supporters dancing in the rain.

There had never been more than a kick of the ball between the sides over the 60 minutes as first one side took the lead and then the other. The endeavour and effort from each and every player was a joy to behold and some of the skills, particularly the kick-passing, was very encouraging.

Throw in the fact that some stunning scores were produced by both sides and one can see why the large attendance enjoyed their evening at HQ.

Another pleasing aspect of the game was the consistency of decisions from match referee, Peadar Walsh.

The Neale started impressively and kicked early points courtesy of Eoghan Lynagh, Daniel Keane, Padraic Walsh and hard-working captain Darragh Moran. Breaffy were moving well and responded with two points apiece from their impressive corner-forwards, Jason Hunt and James McGinty to leave the scores tied after 17 minutes.

That situation remained after Darragh Judge and Daniel Keane had put their names on the scoreboard before Hunt demonstrated his tremendous skill by slipping his marker and drilling over the lead point from 35-yards.

The opening goal of the day arrived four minutes before the break when Kieran O’Malley launched a high ball into the Breaffy goalmouth and Padraic Walsh gathered possession before slamming a shot past Tom Mannion.

Breaffy needed to respond and did so with Matthew Ruane and Gary Walsh driving them forward, Hunt fired over a fine point and then ran onto a pass from Dylan Cannon before sliding the ball into the net past Ian McMahon to leave the Blues 1-7 to 1-5 in front at the interval.

Swapped points from Shane O’Connor and Walsh left Breaffy two clear early in the new half but then The Neale swooped for another goal when Eoghan Lynagh’s shot ended up in the net despite the best efforts of Mannion.

That boosted the southern boys greatly and with their halfback line of Michael Varley, Gary Keane and James Duffy assisting their midfielders they drove forward.

Breaffy did likewise and a flowing move ended with McGinty and O’Connor finding Hunt in space but the ace attacker’s first-time shot was saved by McMahon. Hunt got back on the scoresheet with a pointed free moments later to level the scores but when Kieran O’Malley burst through to put The Neale back in front the roar could be heard in the borderlands.

It seemed as if the Green and White might push on to victory at that stage but Breaffy had other ideas. McGinty continually ran at the opposition defenders and this yielded two vital points for the Blues. O’Connor nearly stretched the Breaffy advantage moments later when he shot for goal but once again McMahon denied him.

Fine play from Gary Keane started a move for The Neale which finished with Walsh balancing the scores at the Bacon Factory End as nervous tension gripped the large attendance.

Breaffy burst through again three minutes from the end when McGinty looked likely to drill home a goal but Evan Summerville got back to block his effort and moments later O’Malley landed a huge point at the other end to put The Neale a point up.

That advantage was greatly boosted in injury time when James Conroy sent a shot all the way to the net to secure a famous victory for the Green and White at the end of a thrilling and memorable final.
