Claws out on Achill
BY KEITH BOURKE
ACHILL’S rich seafood heritage and the finest offerings provided by the Atlantic were celebrated at Féile Bia na Mara recently.
The culinary festival had Ireland’s ‘Good Food Ambassador’, celebrated chef and author Jenny Bristow, as its guest of honour.
The festival, which ran from July 15 to 18, is a celebration of the finest seafood harvested from the Atlantic Ocean. More than 3,000 people attended this year’s event, which was revamped and relaunched two years ago.
The féile kicked off with complimentary oyster-tasting, followed by a gala seafood buffet in Ostan Oileann Acla, where every imaginable type of seafood was displayed in a traditional Achill currach.
Over the weekend there was an opportunity for everyone to sample the incredible variety of Achill seafood, with a range of activities for all the family.
Local woman Annette O’Leary led a ‘seaweed safari’ along Achill’s beautiful coastline where she explained the health and culinary benefits of seaweed and taught participants how to identify the various types. Children aged four to 12 took part in the Cailín agus Buachaill Óg talent competition while there were also local fish markets, family sandcastle competitions, cookery demonstrations, Achill’s Got Talent, seafood BBQs and the RNLI Lifeboat and Coastguard demonstration.
“The féile was a great success this year,” said Helen Applegarth from Achill Tourism. “Numbers were up this year and it seems that the festival is now appealing to a broader audience,” she added.
