The dress that changed a life
BY MARIAN HARRISON

AS GALWAY prepares for the glitz and glamour of Ladies Day, last year’s winner will not be defending her title – because she is on honeymoon!

Mayo woman wed her fiancee Seamus Forde in her native Kilmovee last Friday, almost a year to the day she was crowned Best Dressed Lady at the Galway racing festival.

After seeing his girlfriend on the winner’s podium in Ballybrit last July, Seamus decided to pop the question, getting down on bended knee two days later as the couple holidayed in Portugal.

“He told me that he decided on Thursday on the podium in Ballybrit. He was so proud of me and so glad to be there and to be part of it,” said Mary Therese.

Seamus contacted a jeweller in Dublin and had a picture of the engagement ring emailed to him to surprise his financée.

Last week the couple celebrated their wedding with a ceremony in the Church of the Immaculate Conception in Kilmovee and a reception in Westport.

Mary Therese’s victory in Galway was a success for recessionistas as much as fashionistas.

The sassy shopper won the Anthony Ryan-sponsored competition by coordinating her dress with clever accessories including an inexpensive clutch bag from the high street and a borrowed hat.

Unfortunately, she won’t be in Galway on Thursday next to defend her crown but is looking forward to future festivals.

“That day at the Galway Races really did change my life,” she remarked.

“We are looking forward to be going back next year as Mr and Mrs Forde.”
