Boxer throws weight behind Alzheimers campaign
By: Cróna Esler

MAYO’S legendary boxer and Western People columnist Henry Coyle has come on board in support of Western Alzheimers.

The Belmullet man, who is boxing professionally on the international scene and is now based in Chicago, visited Marian House in Ballindine during a recent visit home to Mayo and agreed to become a patron of the Charity.

Henry, who boxes all over the States, including Madisson Square Garden in New York, is well aware of the devastating effects that Alzheimers disease has on families of sufferers and the genial Erris man is only too happy to promote the great work that is being done by Western Alzheimers all over Connacht and especially in his native county.

Despite the fact that Henry has a very busy schedule in America, the boxer is hopeful that he will be in a position to support a fundraising function that is expected to take place in the US next year.

Noel Higgins (fundraising manager) is delighted with the plan. Noel, and indeed all at Western Alzheimers, are extremely appreciative of Henry’s commitment and enthusiasm and are proud to have Henry Coyle as a patron of their charity.

Accompanying Henry on his visit to Marian House was his father, Fine Gael Cllr Gerry Coyle, as well as a few boxing friends from Claremorris. In fact, Henry was delighted to meet up with an old sparring partner of his, Michael Mullaney from Clare-morris Boxing Club, and of course Mr Boxing in Mayo - the one and only Joe Charles.

And, when he visited Marian House, Henry was in no hurry to leave. He was delighted to sit for a cup of tea with the staff and hear many stories swapped and recounted by Gerry Coyle and Cllr Patsy O’Brien of their times together on Mayo County Council. The group complimented the CEO, John Grant, on his achievements in bringing Western Alzheimers to such a high level.

Meanwhile, Nortel employees have organised a black tie ball which will take place on November 1 at the Radisson Hotel in Galway.

A ticket hotline has been set up on 091-733888 or those interested in purchasing tickets or getting involved in the efforts can email charity@no rtel.com.
