GAA: Cormac is ‘Bane’ of the teachers

GALWAY Gardai - backboned by a sizeable contingent of Mayo natives --were too strong a force for the learned men of Mayo when the floodlights shone on Wednesday night’s final of the Connacht Inter-Firms senior championship.
It was one of Galway’s own however, an inter-county footballer of some repute, who proved the winners biggest star. When Cormac Bane kicked over his 10th point of the game in the 53rd minute, it handed the Gardai a lead of the same margin, and their biggest of the match.
A late rally by Mayo Teachers, which included a goal and three points inside the final five minutes, only managed to improve the look of the scoreboard. The losers had for a brief time during the second half looked as though they might be capable of reeling in their opponents, but a goal for the Gardai by Belmullet native Shane Nallen, seven minutes after his introduction, put an end to those aspirations.
The former Mayo player joined six fellow county men, all of whom started for the law enforcers. Castlebar Mitchels duo Shane Fitzmaurice and Neil Lydon lined out alongside their former Mitchels team-mate, Kilmaine man Pat Kelly, Charlestown’s Mark Caffrey, Mark Walkin of Ballinrobe and The Neale’s Pat Casey. Indeed the number of Mayos in the Galway ranks would have risen had either Ballintubber’s Padraig O’Connor or Colm Boyle of Davitts not been otherwise engaged.
Boyle is of course busily preparing for his club’s All-Ireland IFC final appearance, so too ace attacker Michael Conroy who was a notable absentee for the teachers. In his absence it was left to two midfielders and a defender to score more from play between them than the Mayo Teachers’ six starting forwards.
Apart from at the throw in, the teams were level on only one further occasion throughout the hour, that when Tom Naughton’s 10th minute point cancelled out Cormac Bane’s opener for the Gardai...
